Glucose tolerance testing: a timed appointment, not a single draw

One-hour, two-hour and three-hour protocols all mean the same thing logistically: the provider arrives once and stays, because the collections have to land on the clock the order specifies.

208 independent providers on PhlebFlow list glucose tolerance testing across 112 markets. Published starting fees run from $25 to $275, typically around $80, paid out-of-pocket; the laboratory bills its testing separately. Send a request with your ZIP code and a provider who covers it contacts you to confirm a time.

What this service is

A glucose tolerance appointment is a sequence. There is usually a first collection, then a measured drink, then further collections at intervals the order names — one hour, two hours, three hours, or some combination of them. The provider stays for the whole sequence and labels each specimen with the time it was taken, because the times are part of what the laboratory is reading.

That is what makes it a different booking from a routine draw and priced differently: it occupies a provider for a morning rather than twenty minutes. It also makes the start time load-bearing, since the last collection has to finish early enough for the specimens to reach the laboratory inside its receiving hours.

What to have ready

  • The order or requisition, including which protocol it names and the exact intervals. The provider collects to the times written there and cannot shorten or shift the sequence.
  • The glucose drink, if the ordering clinician or the laboratory expects you to have it — some send it with the paperwork, some expect the provider to bring it. Settle which when you book.
  • Every instruction the clinician or laboratory who ordered the test gave you for the days and hours beforehand, exactly as they gave it. Those instructions are theirs; PhlebFlow does not issue them and does not interpret them.
  • A start time early enough that the final collection still reaches the laboratory inside its receiving window.
  • Somewhere the patient can stay seated and undisturbed for the whole sequence, with the provider present throughout.

Who usually asks for it

  • People sent for a timed protocol who cannot spend a whole morning sitting in a laboratory waiting room.
  • Expectant patients whose clinician has ordered the sequence during pregnancy.
  • People for whom repeated travel between collections is impractical, or who have small children at home.
  • People whose nearest draw station does not offer the longer protocols at all.

Questions about this service

Why does this cost more than a single draw?↓

Because it is several collections and the waiting between them. The provider is committed for the length of the protocol, and each provider prices that themselves.

Who supplies the drink?↓

It varies. Some laboratories send it with the kit, some ordering clinicians hand it over, and some providers carry it. Agree it when booking, because a visit cannot proceed without it.

What if the sequence is interrupted?↓

The provider will tell you and contact whoever ordered the test. Whether an incomplete sequence is usable is the ordering clinician’s and the laboratory’s call, never PhlebFlow’s.
