What this service is

Therapeutic phlebotomy removes a volume of blood specified by a physician’s order. Nothing about the volume, the interval or whether it should happen at all is decided here or by the provider: the order states it, the provider carries it out, and any question about the order goes back to the physician who wrote it.

It is a longer visit than a specimen collection and a more demanding one. It asks for a provider who has done it before, who will stay with the patient afterwards for the observation period the order specifies, and who has agreed in advance with the ordering physician what happens if the visit has to be stopped. Providers who list it are saying they are set up for exactly that; providers who do not list it are not.

What to have ready

The physician’s written order, stating the volume and the interval. A provider carries out the order in front of them and cannot alter, estimate or substitute one.
A contact for the ordering physician’s office that will answer during the visit, agreed before the appointment rather than looked up during it.
Any instruction the ordering physician gave you about the day of the procedure, exactly as they gave it. Those instructions are theirs; PhlebFlow does not issue them, does not add to them and does not interpret them.
A chair or bed where the patient can be reclined, and somewhere for them to remain afterwards for as long as the order says.
Someone else at home for the appointment and for a while after it, unless the ordering physician has said otherwise.
